Short answer: a matchmaker costs anywhere from about $1,000 to $500,000 or more. Introductions from a member database sit at the low end, a few thousand dollars for six to twelve months. Firms that recruit outside their own database usually charge $15,000 to $150,000 a year, and retained international searches start around $50,000.

Our conclusion
6 of 12 matchmaking services that work in New York start within $15,000 for 12 months.
The typical entry price here is $22,500. Most firms add the real cost at the consultation: more introductions, a second city or an active search push it up. Velin Privé publishes its prices and starts from $1,800, about 6 times below the typical entry price.

What you are actually paying for
Two firms can both call themselves matchmakers and sell completely different products. Four things explain almost the whole spread between a $30 app subscription and a six-figure search.
Who does the work. On an app, you do the searching and your time is the labor. With a matchmaker, a person reviews candidates, speaks to them and decides who you meet. The more hours a named matchmaker spends on your search each week, the higher the fee.
Where the candidates come from. This is the biggest single driver. Introducing you to people who have already signed up with the firm is cheap. Finding someone who has never heard of the firm, approaching them and vetting them for you is expensive. When you compare quotes, ask whether the fee covers recruiting outside the existing database or only introductions within it.
What is guaranteed. A guaranteed number of introductions, a pause option or an extra month at the end all cost the firm money, so they are priced into the fee. Read how a firm counts a "match": some count it only when both people agree and exchange numbers, others count any introduction.
How long and how far. A twelve-month contract rarely costs twice a six-month one, which is why longer terms are offered. A search across several cities or countries costs more, because it multiplies the sourcing work.
Matchmaker cost by type of service
These are the five price bands we see across the 21 firms and 3 premium apps in our comparison. Use them to place a quote you have been given.
| Type of service | Typical price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Premium dating app | $30–$1,000 a month | Better filters and visibility. No matchmaker. |
| Done-for-you dating on apps | about $1,700 a month | A team writes your profile and messages for you on ordinary apps. |
| Introductions from a member database | $2,000–$20,000 | A matchmaker picks people who have already joined the firm. |
| Matchmaker with active search | $15,000–$150,000 a year | Database plus recruiting outside it, with personal vetting. |
| Retained or international search | $50,000–$500,000+ | A bespoke search built around one client, often across countries. |

Matchmaker cost per month
Monthly cost is the easiest way to compare a six-month package with a two-year contract. A standard six-month membership published at $15,000 works out to $2,500 a month. A firm whose clients typically spend $15,000 to $65,000 a year sits between $1,250 and $5,400 a month. Done-for-you app services charge about $1,700 a month on a rolling basis.
For reference, Velin Privé memberships cost between $291 and $345 a month: $1,840 for six months, $3,496 for twelve and $6,210 for eighteen.
Matchmaker cost per introduction
Price per introduction shows what the fee actually buys. Divide the fee by the number of introductions the firm actually commits to. Where firms state it, we see roughly $1,050 to $3,100 per match at mid-market services that sell by match count. At Velin Privé the figure is about $414 to $460 per introduction, because the number of introductions on each tier is published.
If a firm will not tell you how many introductions to expect, you cannot work this out, and that is worth knowing before you sign.
Three typical searches, priced
Introductions from a member database, twelve months
A professional in a large US city who is happy to meet people the firm already knows will usually pay $2,000 to $6,000 at a lunch-date style service, or up to $20,000 at a larger database firm. Expect introductions only in cities where the firm has members, and few details on how many.
A matchmaker who searches for you, twelve months
This is where most founders and executives land. Published and reported fees run from $15,000 to $65,000 for a typical client, with top packages at $150,000. You get a named matchmaker, personal vetting and, at the better firms, recruiting outside the database. Ask how many introductions the fee covers before you compare totals.
A retained international search
For a client who wants someone specific, across several countries, firms quote $50,000 to $500,000, and a couple of firms list packages from $1 million. The fee buys the matchmaker's time almost exclusively for one client.
Costs beyond the fee
The contract price is not the whole budget. Plan for the dates themselves, travel if your matches live in another city, new photographs if the firm asks for them, and coaching sessions, which some firms sell separately. None of this is large next to a five-figure fee, but it adds up over a year, and it is rarely mentioned on a consultation call.
Time is the other cost. A good matchmaker saves you hours of swiping and messaging, but you still need to give honest feedback after every introduction. The faster you reply, the faster the matchmaker learns what to look for next.
Why most matchmakers don't publish prices
Only 7 of the 21 firms we priced publish their fees. The rest quote after a consultation, and the figures you read online come from press interviews, reviewers and former clients. Firms say each search is different, and that is partly true, but it also means two clients can pay very different amounts for the same service.
When a firm does not publish prices, ask for the quote in writing, with the term, the number of introductions and the refund terms on the same page.
Contract terms that change the real price
These terms, all taken from real matchmaking contracts and reviews, change what you actually pay:
Does location change matchmaker cost?
For firms that work from their own database, yes: they can only introduce people in the cities where they have members, and big-city firms charge more. London firms are reported at £10,000 to £100,000 or more a year, and Dubai firms at $65,000 to $350,000.
For an active search it matters much less, because the matchmaker goes looking wherever the right person is. Velin Privé searches worldwide, so the price is the same wherever you live. For one city in detail, see what a matchmaker costs in Barcelona.
Getting a quote you can compare

When the fee pays for itself
It depends on what the fee replaces: months of app dating, the risk of being recognized on a public profile, and time you would rather spend elsewhere. We cover this in detail in Is a Matchmaker Worth the Money? For a side-by-side of named firms, see our Lyons Elite cost, compared with six firms and what Tawkify costs.
How we compiled these prices
We track 30 matchmaking firms in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and the Gulf, plus three premium dating apps for comparison. Once a month we check each firm's own price pages and contract terms, then press coverage and recent client reviews on Trustpilot, Reddit and review sites. Where a firm publishes its fee, we use that figure. Where it does not, we use the most recent figure reported by a named, independent source and mark it as reported.
Nine of the 30 firms publish nothing and have no reliable reported figure, so they are left out of the calculator. Pounds and euros are converted to dollars at a fixed rate. Estimates for terms longer than a firm's standard contract assume renewal at the same rate; terms shorter than the minimum contract are charged in full. If you have a recent quote from any of these firms, the calculator above will tell you where it sits.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do people pay for a matchmaker?
Most people who hire a matchmaker pay between $2,000 and $20,000 for introductions from a member database, or $15,000 to $150,000 a year for a matchmaker who also recruits outside it. Retained international searches start around $50,000.
How much does a matchmaker cost per month?
Roughly $290 to $5,400 a month for most human-led services, depending on how much active searching is included. Premium apps cost $30 to $1,000 a month and done-for-you app services about $1,700.
How much does it cost to hire a matchmaker in New York?
We found no firm that publishes a separate New York price list; most charge their national rates there. For an active search, expect $15,000 and up for a year. Firms that search worldwide charge the same wherever you are.
Do matchmakers guarantee introductions?
Some do, and they price the guarantee in. Read how the firm counts a match: some count only introductions where both people agree to meet.
Do matchmakers charge men and women differently?
Some do. At several firms the paying client is usually the man, and women are interviewed as candidates or pay a consultation fee, reported at $500 to $4,000 at one New York firm. Ask each firm which side of the search you would be on before comparing prices. At Velin Privé both sides are vetted the same way; how our matchmaking for men works is set out step by step.
